Mountain lion euthanized after killing livestock, housecat in Wood River Valley

Idaho Fish and Game said there have been more reports of mountain lions in residential areas and several non-fatal and fatal attacks on pets.

BLAINE COUNTY, Idaho — The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) said there has been an increased amount of mountain lion activity in the Wood River Valley in the past few weeks. The department said there have been sightings in densely populated areas and cities, as well as, fatal and non-fatal pet attacks.

According to IDFG, dogs have been attacked in East Fork and a cat, 2 geese, 11 chickens and 6 ducks were killed in Hailey. The first attack was on Sunday, Jan. 12 in Hailey, a female mountain lion went after the animals. It was euthanized by IDFG after it was found in an "animal enclosure" on Jan. 14. The second was on Monday, Jan. 22 in East Fork and the owner was able to save the dogs.

IDFG is reminding people to make sure all barns, sheds and animal enclosures are secured.

IDFG tips for personal and pet safety around mountain lions:

NEVER run away from a mountain lion. The lion's instinct is to chase and ultimately catch what they perceive as potential prey.

NEVER turn your back on a lion. Always face them while making yourself look as large as you can. Yell loudly, but don't scream. A high-pitched scream may mimic the sound of a wounded animal.

SLOWLY back away while maintaining eye contact with the lion.

When walking or hiking, safety equipment to carry could include a cannister of bear spray, a noise device like an air-horn, and if you walk in the dark, a very bright flashlight.

If you are attacked, fight back!

Residents should check around their homes or apartments for areas where a lion could find a place to hide or daybed. Areas under decks should be blocked so that lions cannot access the space during daylight hours.

People should report mountain lion attacks to law enforcement and sightings to the Magic Valley Regional Office at (208) 324-4359.
