Prescribed fires in Boise National Forest starting May 13

The prescribed burns help reduce the risk of wildfires.

IDAHO, USA — The Forest Service for the Boise National Forest announced the upcoming schedule for prescribed burns. The burns help control future wildfires. The burns start May 13 and the schedule could change due to weather.

The Forest Service said people may see smoke several days after a burn and should be aware of crews along the roads. 

Prescribed Burn Schedule:  

Mores South – 145 acres

Where: 4 mi. east of Idaho City, along Forest Road 327 (Rabbit Creek Road).

When: May 14 (previously started April 30, but incomplete due to weather)

Duration: 1-2 days of burning, 5-7 days of post fire monitoring.

Impacts: Potential smoke in Idaho City, Hwy. 21, and Granite Creek Recreation Site.

Boise Basin Experimental Forest – 187 acres

Where: 1 mi. north of Idaho City, along Forest Road 307.

When: May 13

Duration: 1-2 days of burning, 5-7 days of post fire monitoring.

Impacts: Potential smoke in Idaho City and Hwy. 21.

Avelene – 250 acres

Where: 8 mi. southwest of Idaho City, near intersection of Grimes Creek and Clear Creek.

When: May 13 (previously scheduled for May 1 but delayed due to weather)

Duration: 1-2 days of burning, 5-7 days of post fire monitoring.

Impacts: Potential smoke to community of Clear Creek and Hwy. 21 corridor between Boise and Idaho City.

High Fork – 73 acres

Where: About 7.5 mi. northeast of Ola, north of High Valley.

When: May 15

Duration: 1 day of burning, 5-7 days of post fire monitoring.

Impacts: Potential smoke impacting Hwy. 55 corridor, Smith Ferry and Ola.

West Lowman – 613 acres

Where: Three separate burn areas, between 1 and 4.5 mi. east of Lowman along Hwy. 21.

When: May 14-17

Duration: 3-4 days of burning, 5-7 days of post fire monitoring.

Impacts: Potential smoke along Hwy. 21 in and around Lowman.

Crawford – 86 acres

Where: 3 miles east of Cascade at Crawford Work Center along Warm Lake Rd. 

When: May 13

Duration: 2-3 days of burning, 5-7 days of post fire monitoring.

Impacts: Potential smoke impacting Cascade and Hwy. 55 corridor.
