Plans unveiled for possible Bronco stadium expansion

The Boise State Athletic department unveiled a plan to expandBronco Stadium onFriday.

Boise State Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier presented plans for a very ambitious expansion to the forty year old stadium. In three different phases he hopes to add a total of nearly 20,000 seats to Bronco Stadium.

Although Boise State would love to add to the stadium, they've had trouble filling it in the past. Last season, the Broncos had seven home games and only sold out two of them -- the Idaho and Oregon games.

We haven't sold out ever season ticket we have available, but come game day this place is 98-99-100-percent full, said Bleymaier. We think one of the realities here, one of the needs is we need to provide cost effective seat opportunities for this community.

One step in the expansion would remove the track and drop the field down, creating more seats in a lower bowl. The plan is not to horseshoe off the south endzone like what many people thought initially. Rather, the plan calls for a major facelift to the north endzone. The plans have the area almost totally closed off with a small slit of a view for the mountains.

Bleymaier and other Boise State officials are going to make the pitch to help expand the stadium to boosters and people close to the program and see where they can go from there.

There is no timetable for the expansion to take place at this point in time.
