BOISE, Idaho — Seattle Reign FC has extended former Centennial High School standout and Boise native Sofia Huerta through the 2027 NWSL season, the club announced Thursday.

The two-time Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year is one of two players in NWSL history with at least 30 goals and 30 assists, and her 31 regular-season assists is tied for the most all-time.

Huerta has totaled 12 assists since joining Seattle in 2020 after a trade with the Houston Dash. She leads all Reign players in assists, crosses (341) and chances created (105) since 2021, and her dozen dishes rank fifth in club history.

The standout defender is in her fourth season with the Reign. She signed a three-year extension with the club in February 2022.

“I’m so excited to stay in Seattle and sign an extension here with the Reign,” Huerta said. “Since joining the team in 2020, I’ve felt the support from our fans and I’m looking forward to growing that connection while getting more involved in the community. For years we’ve been a winning team and competed for trophies and I can’t wait to continue that with this team!”

The Gem State native has played all 270 minutes through three games this season, one of two Reign players to do so, alongside goalkeeper Claudia Dickey. In her fourth season in the Emerald City, Huerta owns 59 starts in 62 regular season games.

Last summer, the 31-year-old earned her first-ever World Cup call-up, becoming the first player from Idaho to make a U.S. Women's World Cup roster. She made her debut for the United States in September 2017, and has a total of 32 caps and four assists with the national team.

Since being selected by the Chicago Red Stars in the 2015 NWSL Draft with the 11th overall pick, Huerta has the ninth-most regular season appearances (172) and 11th-most starts (161) in league history.

She stands alone as the only player with at least one goal and two assists in every NWSL season between 2015 and 2023, and her 14,556 minutes played ranks eighth all-time.

Huerta's legacy in women's soccer is undeniable. In 2022, the Reign veteran was named to the 2022 National Women's Soccer League Best XI First Team, honoring the top players in the league. She was also a finalist for NWSL Defender of the Year.

During her career as a Patriot in the City of Trees, the state's two-time top player recorded 126 goals and 47 assists and also took him a pair of conference player of the year awards. Huerta was a six-time state champion with Les Bois United.

Huerta went on to be a four-year starter at Santa Clara, posting 47 goals, 19 assists and 348 shots. She was named co-WCC Player of the Year and landed on the All-WCC first team as a senior in 2014.
