Gas prices rise ahead of 4th of July travel

The national average price for a gallon of gas is expected to be $3.49 on July 4, according to GasBuddy.

BOISE, Idaho — As many Americans gear up for their 4th of July plans, travelers should expect higher prices at the pump after a rise in cost ahead of the nation's birthday.

According to GasBuddy, the expected national average price for a gallon of gas will be $3.49 on Thursday, July 4. However, prices have been comparatively lower than in years past, with this week marking the lowest holiday price since 2021.

The average cost is one cent less than last year's mark of $3.50, but more than $1.30 below the Independence Day pump price in 2022, per GasBuddy.

"For those hitting the road to celebrate Independence Day, gas prices have seen modest recent fluctuations, but most states are seeing prices near or even well below where they were a year ago," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

GasBuddy said that in its annual summer survey, more than 40% of respondents said they planned to travel for Independence Day weekend.

In the Gem State, AAA reports the average price of a gallon of gas is $3.60 as of Tuesday, July 2.
