GasBuddy predicts diesel prices will keep going up while unleaded gas stabilizes

Average gas prices continue to increase nationally with unknowns of when they will stop.

BOISE, Idaho — BOISE, Idaho — Gas prices are on the rise, averaging about $3.97 per gallon. Just in the last week, average gas prices in Boise alone have increased by 12.1 cents per gallon.

With the hot temperatures, local gas prices are being impacted. GasBuddy reports how the increase in heat affects more than just the environment.

"Average gasoline prices continued to move up last week thanks to a continued rise in oil and continued pressure from hot weather that impacted refineries. However, the pace of increases has started to slow down over the last few days, and for now, appears to have hit a peak over the weekend and is beginning to gently fall," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Idaho

As of Monday, August 7, the lowest statewide price was $3.67 per gallon of regular unleaded, meanwhile, the highest price reached $4.49 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.

Regional

Boise is not alone. Neighboring states are also seeing a rise in gas price, some more than 15 cents per gallon.

Oregon is averaging at about $4.62 per gallon, up 4.6 cents from last week. In Ogden, Utah, the average gas price is up 17.7 cents, coming in at $4.09 per gallon.

National

Surveying nearly 150,000 stations nationwide, GasBuddy reports a national uptick in cost in both unleaded and diesel. The national average for regular unleaded rose 28.1 cents per gallon from the previous month, however, this average is still 22 cents lower than a year ago.

Diesel prices have surged 14.9 cents in the last week, bringing the national average to $4.14 per gallon.

De Haan said he anticipates diesel prices to remain on an upward trajectory.

"The price of diesel, however, continues to rise at a fairly strong pace, with average prices up nearly 15 cents per gallon from a week ago. Diesel will likely continue to see upward momentum while (unleaded) gasoline price increases should become more limited. But, with oil remaining under pressure from Saudi Arabia extending its 1 million barrel per day production cut into September, the respite from gasoline rising may not last long. Plus, there remain unknowns about hurricane season that will likely become more active in the weeks ahead," De Haan said.
