A welcomed 'treat' for Halloween: Gas prices in Idaho drop by a nickel

Idaho drivers can expect to be a little less frightened when they stop to fill up before trick-or-treating this week. AAA data shows the Gem State's average dropped.

IDAHO, USA — As of Monday, the average cost for unleaded gasoline decreased by 5 cents per gallon, according to AAA Idaho.

GasBuddy's survey of 216 stations calculated a slightly slimmer margin, reflecting a decrease of only 3.3 cents for Idaho's average gas price since last week.

The average price for gas per gallon in the state's capital city of Boise is $3.91, according to AAA data (GasBuddy data shows $3.85 per gallon). Although the new Idaho average is only a nickel less than last Monday's report, it is 25 cents less than one month ago and 45 cents less than one year ago.

Idaho:

According to GasBuddy, the cheapest station in Boise was priced at $3.69 per gallon, while the most expensive was $4.12 per gallon - a 43-cent difference. The lowest price in the Gem State yesterday was $3.39/g while the highest was $5.09/g, a difference of $1.70/g.

"In the run-up to Halloween, significant gas price savings were taking on the appearance of 'Where's Waldo?', but with Idaho pump prices dropping by another nickel as they did last week, maybe our elusive friend has finally been found," said AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. "In any case, it's nice to start putting some distance between us and the $4 mark."

Here's a look at Idaho gas prices as of 10/30/23:

  • Boise - $3.92
  • Coeur d'Alene - $3.97
  • Franklin - $3.88
  • Idaho Falls - $3.85
  • Lewiston - $3.90
  • Pocatello - $3.85
  • Rexburg - $3.92
  • Twin Falls - $3.86

Regional:

AAA ranks Idaho 8th in the country for most expensive gasoline - behind California ($5.29), Hawaii ($4.75), Washington ($4.70), Nevada ($4.59), Oregon ($4.35), Alaska ($4.28) and Arizona ($4.02).

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices:

  • Idaho- $3.88/g, down 3.3 cents per gallon from last week's $3.91/g.
  • Ogden- $3.66/g, down 11.4 cents per gallon from last week's $3.77/g.
  • Oregon- $4.31/g, down 10.5 cents per gallon from last week's $4.42/g.

"Utah and Montana, which supply most of our finished gasoline, saw average prices fall by nine and 15 cents this week," Conde said. "Hopefully, this bodes well for bigger price drops in Idaho."

The West Texas Intermediate benchmark for crude oil is now trading near $82 per barrel, which is a $3 drop from last Monday. However, AAA reports that crude prices continue to fluctuate from day to day as the market reacts to ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East, preventing an even greater drop in prices.

National:

Meanwhile, the national average currently sits at $3.49 per gallon, which is also about a nickel less than last week, 33 cents less than one month ago and 25 cents less than one year ago, according to AAA Idaho.

GasBuddy data reflects slight variation, quoting the national average price of gas at $3.45 per gallon. It found the national average to be down 36.3 cents per gallon from one month ago and 27.4 cents less than one year ago.

Historical gasoline prices in Boise and the national average going back ten years, according to GasBuddy:

  • October 30, 2022: $4.30/g (U.S. Average: $3.72/g)
  • October 30, 2021: $3.79/g (U.S. Average: $3.39/g)
  • October 30, 2020: $2.23/g (U.S. Average: $2.12/g)
  • October 30, 2019: $3.01/g (U.S. Average: $2.61/g)
  • October 30, 2018: $3.06/g (U.S. Average: $2.80/g)
  • October 30, 2017: $2.70/g (U.S. Average: $2.46/g)
  • October 30, 2016: $2.45/g (U.S. Average: $2.20/g)
  • October 30, 2015: $2.35/g (U.S. Average: $2.18/g)
  • October 30, 2014: $3.31/g (U.S. Average: $3.00/g)
  • October 30, 2013: $3.66/g (U.S. Average: $3.26/g)

"Average gasoline prices have fallen for a sixth straight week in nearly every state, with the national average now at its lowest level since March," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "The West Coast has been home to some of the largest declines, with California seeing an impressive 80-cent drop in the last four weeks, dispelling the myth that prices don't fall as fast as they go up. In this case, they have gone done extremely quickly, a trend that will see Arizona fall back below $4 this week."

"Nevada could join the sub-$4 club by Thanksgiving, and some stations in California will soon see a three-handle price return," De Haan continued. "For now, I believe we could see a further 10-20 cent drop in the national average in the weeks ahead, but any jolt in the delicate Middle East still holds the potential to disrupt the drop we're seeing."
