LA GRANDE, Ore. — Eastbound Interstate 84 is back open in eastern Oregon.
The interstate was completely shut down after a snowstorm created icy and hazardous driving conditions Friday morning. The Oregon Department of Transportation sent out an alert at 3:30 p.m. that all lanes were open again.
The closure stretched from Exit 265 in La Grande to three miles east of Pendleton.
According to ODOT, "severe winter conditions" caused multiple trucks to slide off the road between mileposts 287 and 289. The eastbound closure will remain in place until conditions improve, officials said.
Westbound I-84 remained open. Traffic cameras in the area show the highway nearly covered in snow.
Drivers are also facing heavy snow and high winds on Oregon 204, the Tollgate Highway, running between Elgin and Weston, Oregon. The road was closed west of Elgin between mileposts 10 and 40. ODOT warned of the possibility of fallen trees along that route.
Travelers in eastern Oregon are urged to delay their trip if they can. If you must drive, use caution and slow down, make sure to have snow tires or chains, and be prepared for possible travel delays.
