BOISE, Idaho — Beginning Saturday, July 25 to August 7, Idaho State Police will be working with other local law enforcement agencies and ITD Office of Highway Safety (OHS) to educate and enforce seat belt laws during traffic stops.
Seat belt use in Idaho is lower than the national average, at 85%, according to OHS. Nearly two-thirds of people killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing their seat belts, and the majority of the people involved were killed on rural roads.
Idaho law requires occupants of a vehicle to wear seatbelts while operating machinery. For the duration of this initiative, ISP officers and Idaho troopers will be increasing their efforts to educate Idahoans about the importance of wearing seatbelts.
"Fastening your seat belt is not an option; it's the law. We want people to understand that buckling up can be the difference between life and death in a crash," said Lt. Chris Weadick of ISP District 6 in Eastern Idaho. "Safety is our top priority, and ISP is proud to stand with local law enforcement throughout the state to help spread the word about the importance of buckling up."
