Top 10 most bizarre items confiscated at Idaho airports in 2022

TSA shares the Top 10 most unusual items TSA officers found in Idaho travelers' carry-on luggage at airports in 2022.

BOISE, Idaho — Boise Airport hosted the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for an event revealing their Top 10 list for the most unusual items discovered in Idaho travelers' luggage by TSA officers in the year 2022.

On Tuesday, TSA officers shared what they found to be the ten strangest things they found last year in Idahoans' carry-ons at two different Idaho airports, Boise Airport (BOI) and Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA).

Every December, the administration shares a Top 10 list of confiscated objects discovered during screenings for both the state and across all national airports.

One of the 2022 nationally featured objects was a hair scrunchie containing illegal pills inside at BOI in September.

While there are certainly plenty of weird items that will leave you wondering, 'what was that person thinking,' here's TSA's list of the top ten most unusual items found in travelers' luggage at Idaho airports in 2022.

Idaho's Top 10 bizarre items:

  1. BOI Ceremonial sword
Sword of a poor packing choice to bring. This work of art disguised as a knife was in a carry-on bag and easy to spot on the X-ray image.

  2. BOI Nail gun
Nail this down. Power tools belong in checked bags.

  3. IDA Stun gun
A stun gun that doubles as a flashlight? Stun guns should travel in checked bags and be disabled to avoid accidental discharge during transport.

  4. IDA Training firearm
Perhaps a little more training is in store for this firearm instructor.

  5. BOI Grenade
Throw away the idea of bringing this item to the airport altogether. Grenades, inert grenades and replica grenades all look the same as they pass through the X-ray machine. They are not allowed anywhere near an airplane.

  6. BOI Bowling pin
Items that could double as a bludgeoning device are not allowed in carry-on luggage.

  7. IDA Belt knife
Don't waist your time trying to carry this item on. This is a checked bag item.

  8. BOI Replica ammunition and whiskey stones
These replica bullets were actually whiskey stones stored in a replica revolver barrel.

  9. IDA Collapsible baton
Swing and a miss. Leave the batons in your checked luggage.

  10. IDA Knife necklace
This necklace may make your outfit look pretty sharp. But knives are no flies, even if it's in the form of jewelry.

Each item was discovered during routine X-ray screenings at security checkpoints inside of the airports.

Upon discovery, officers typically provide the passenger with the options of checking the item through their airline, leaving the item with someone not traveling or leaving it in their vehicle if it is nearby.

At the event, TSA also discussed the record number of firearms discovered by officers in the carry-on luggage of travelers departing BOI and IDA in 2022, followed by a demonstration of how to properly pack a firearm for transport on a commercial aircraft.

In 2022, TSA discovered a national total of 6,500+ firearms, of which 49 were from Idaho airports.

Even if a traveler has a concealed weapons permit, firearms are not permitted in carry-on luggage.

All firearms must be unloaded, packed in a hard case and transported in checked luggage.
