BOISE, Idaho — Winter is in full swing now and many people are out shoveling their driveway, but something you might not think of is the sidewalk in front of your home or business.
The Ada County Highway District wants to remind the community to clear the sidewalk in front of your property, director of maintenance Jennifer Berenger said.
“Each cities have ordinances to take care of the snow in front of their properties," she said. "Property owners or anyone living in that residence or businesses should be out shoveling the front of their sidewalks.”
Not doing this could result in getting fined by the city you live in. Here are the ordinances for each city in Ada County.
Another way to get fined is a mistake many people make, shoveling the snow onto the roadways.
“It’s illegal for citizens to put snow into the roadways. It causes other obstructions and puts the burden on other taxpayers to pay for that removal as well," Berenger said.
Berenger says the best place to put the snow is on your property.
“As it melts, it will become water, which is much needed for your lawn to get it ready for the spring," she said.
ACHD encourages the community to help each other out when it comes to shoveling snow off the sidewalk.
"In Idaho, we take care of each other," Berenger said. "If you see a neighbor who is struggling to get that taken care of, maybe they have physical limitations. Help, pitch in and clear their sidewalks.”
