Airlines issue weather waivers at MSP, other airports ahead of storm

If you have a flight this week in the Midwest you should start making other plans.

MINNEAPOLIS — Airlines have already begun issuing travel waivers ahead of the snowstorm that's expected to blast the Midwest later this week.

The multi-day storm is forecasted to dump several inches of snow. The time span for the storm is Tuesday afternoon through Thursday evening, with the heaviest snow falling Wednesday night through Thursday. Winter Storm Watches are already posted.

As of 2:30 p.m. Feb. 22, 2023, nearly 400 flights have been canceled and nine flights are delayed going to and from MSP Airport.

Here's a look at which airlines are issuing travel waivers for MSP Airport and other airports:

American Airlines

Change fees will be waived for American Airlines flights departing from, to or through these airports as long as travel is rescheduled in the originally ticketed cabin, in any fare class, and the passenger(s) can travel between Feb. 20 and 27.

The original ticket must have been purchased by Feb. 19, 2023 for original travel between Feb. 20-23, 2023. The rebooking window is Feb. 20 until Feb. 23, 2023. Fare differences may apply.

Delta Air Lines

Over a half dozen Minnesota airports, including Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, are eligible for travel waivers.

Impacted travel dates are Feb. 20-24, 2023. Fare differences will be waived for tickets rebooked on or before Feb. 27 in the same cabin of service as the original ticket. If rebooked travel happens after Feb. 27, a fare difference may apply.

Frontier

Changes fees will be waived for in, out of or through 10 midwest cities, including Minneapolis-St. Paul. Tickets must have been purchased on or before Feb. 19, 2023 for travel between Feb. 21-23, 2023.

If the new itinerary is lower in value than the original itinerary, there will be no residual value available once passengers have made the change.

JetBlue

Change fees, fare differences and cancellation charges will be waived for JetBlue flights impacting MSP, DEN, SLC and Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN).

The original ticket must have been purchased by Feb. 20, 2023 for original travel between Feb. 21-22, 2023. The rebooking window is until Feb. 25, 2023.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest issued travel waivers for seven cities, including Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Impacted travel dates are Feb. 20-22, 2023. Travel may be rebooked in the original class of service and travel must take place within 14 days of the original travel date between the original city pairs by Southwest's accommodation procedures.

Spirit Airlines

Change fees and fare differences will be waived for Spirit flights departing between Feb. 21-23 to, from and through MSP, Denver International Airport (DEN) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC).

The rebooking window is until Feb. 27, 2023. After this date, the change fee is still waived but fare differences may apply.

Sun County Airlines

Sun Country will allow passengers who purchased tickets to and from MSP (and other Midwest airports) to rebook to another Sun Country flight one time with no additional cost if:

  • Original tickets were purchased before Feb. 19, 2023
  • Travel was originally for Feb. 21, 2023 and Feb. 24, 2023
  • New travel begins by March 3, 2023
  • Space is available within the same cabin as the original ticket

On Tuesday afternoon, Southwest issued a statement that said due to the winter storm the airline is canceling "approximately 55 flights" that were scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. All passengers would be notified by email.

United Airlines

Change fees and fare differences will be waived for United flights departing on or before Feb. 26, 2023, as long as travel is rescheduled in the originally ticketed cabin (any fare class) and between the same cities as originally ticketed.

The original ticket must have been purchased by Feb. 18, 2023 for original travel between Feb. 21-23, 2023.

The rebooking window is Feb. 20 until Feb. 26, 2023.
