BOISE, Idaho — WHEN | 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 26: A Red Flag Warning (or Fire Weather Warning) has been issued for Wednesday for southeast Oregon and portions of west-central Idaho, including the Payette National Forest. Exact timing and placement of these storms will be difficult to pinpoint, so all residents and anyone recreating in eastern Oregon and SW Idaho should be on alert, take fire precautions and be ready to head indoors if thunder roars.
IMPACT | Scattered thunderstorms will develop as early as Wednesday morning, which could produce cloud-to-ground lightning strikes and gusty outflow winds. The storms, combined with low humidity and dry vegetation, could spark and rapidly spread new fires.
NEED | A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. These conditions promote rapid spread of fire, which may become life threatening. Evacuate if ordered to, or if a fire threatens.
- Avoid driving or parking vehicles on dry vegetation
- Do not use fireworks or toss burning cigarettes on dry ground
- Secure trailer hitches (dragging metal can create sparks)
- Make sure campfires are fully out
- No outdoor burning while fire conditions are high
- Follow all fire restrictions
- If a fire is spotted, get to safety and alert authorities immediately
