The avalanche danger is extreme in the backcountry surrounding Hailey and Stanley

Most of the warnings are ending on Monday, Dec. 12.

IDAHO, USA — The Forest Service Sawtooth Avalanche Center in Ketchum has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING for the areas surrounding Banner Summit, Sawtooth, Western Smoky & Solider Mountains.  The avalanche danger for the warning area is extreme.

The City of Hailey reported multiple avalanches off of Della Mountain and into Big River around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11. The Hailey Fire Department did respond and city crews are working to divert water and reopen channels. The city reports that neighborhoods are safe but are asking people to be extremely careful; when travelling by the river and not to go into the area unless necessary. 

The National Weather Service has also issued WINTER STORM WARNINGS and WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES for several mountain areas around the region.  

Avalanche Warnings are listed for several Sawtooth Mountain areas including; Smoky, White Cloud, Boulder, Soldier and Pioneer. There are also warnings for areas of the Southern Salmon River Mountains including; Banner Summit, Stanley, Atlanta, Smiley Creek, Galena Summit, Ketchum, Hailey, Bellevue, Carey and Fairfield.
