BOISE, Idaho — Drivers and pedestrians may be able to expect changes to some Boise street intersections.
The City of Boise Mayor’s Office is proposing red light cameras to be installed on traffic lights.
The installation of red light cameras would be a pilot project for Boise.
Bre Brush, a transportation advisor for the mayor's office, will discuss the topic at a Boise City Council work session Tuesday night and present the project proposal to the Ada County Highway District (ACHD) during a commission meeting at 12 p.m. Wednesday.
The pilot project would install cameras on traffic lights to enforce consequences for drivers running red lights.
Brush said the current cameras that Boise has on traffic lights are closed-circuit television and only show live streams of intersections.
The prospective new cameras can take photos of vehicles that run red lights to issue warnings or citations.
“We'll be looking at those intersections that might be hard for officers to service and might be hard for them to get in and out of if they are going to be policing in a certain area," Brush told KTVB Tuesday. "Or we'll look at areas that we know are dangerous or have red light running problems and complaints."
Brush said red light cameras like this have not been used in Idaho before. The City of Boise Mayor’s Office developed this proposal for the cameras to be used as a tool by police to enforce safety as the community grows.
As the proposal is pending approval, details about quantity and locations of the cameras will be decided later.
Brush said it is likely that a funding request would need to be asked of Boise City Council if the cameras are approved.
The mayor's office will likely look to the City of Boise Traffic Fatality Review Task Force for advice on problem areas and ideal red light camera locations since the task force has members from ACHD and the Boise Police Department.
