Juliaetta community remembers homicide victim potentially connected to Idaho shooting suspects

James Mauney, 83, is being remembered as a kind man and staple of the outdoor community in Juliaetta, Idaho.

JULIAETTA, Idaho — A small town in Latah County is remembering one of their own. Eighty-three-year-old James Mauney went missing last Wednesday while walking his dogs in Juliaetta, Idaho.

He's one of the suspected victims of two men accused of leading police on a multi-state manhunt after they escaped following a shooting at a hospital in Boise. Those suspects were back in an Ada County courtroom Monday afternoon.

Mauney has been part of the Juliaetta community for years and is mainly known for being part of the outdoor community with many accompanying him on hunting and fishing trips, as well as renowned dog trainer. Before moving to Idaho, he lived in Alaska, where he worked as a biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game.

Inside the Blackberry Brew and Pub in the middle of town, there's a table full of items in remembrance of Mauney, including a book he wrote about hunting and fishing with his dogs. They're also raising money for his wife, as the couple frequently visited the restaurant.

According to officials, Mauney went missing last week while walking his dogs on a nearby trail in the area of Railroad Street. Idaho State Police (ISP) said his body was found miles away in a desolate area near the small community of Leland.

His dogs were found near Orofino at the home of the other suspected victim, 72-year-old Gerald "Don" Henderson.

The suspects, Skylar Meade and Nicholas Umphenour, were located and arrested in Twin Falls County after a short pursuit.

James Waham has been a friend of Mauney's for over a decade and remembered him as a kind man who would go goose and duck hunting with him and his son.

"He was a staple on the bike path, always very pleasant and polite and just cared about the community," Waham said. "So, anybody that had come in contact with him would just how nice of a person he was and that's obviously going to leave a hole in the community."

This Wednesday at 6 p.m., the Blackberry Brew and Pub is hosting a public forum with Latah County law enforcement to talk about the community and safety.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Mauney's wife.
