BOISE, Idaho — Most Americans get excited about football and Idaho is no different, and one of the things people enjoy during a game is snacking and drinking. "Errybody shots," as Lil Jon might say, but also everyone find a safe way home.

It's almost customary to have a drink while watching the game, but local law enforcement is performing special DUI operations over the weekend. Although drinking is not illegal, drinking and driving is, beyond getting a DUI a driver could also injure themselves or someone else.

"The DUI operation will focus on areas that are known for alcohol-related issues as well as Driving Under the Influence violations. Driving Under the Influence includes alcohol, drugs, and anything ingested into the body that makes a person unsafe to safely drive their vehicle. Preliminary data from the Idaho Office of Highway Safety shows that 31 people have lost their lives in traffic collisions in Idaho since Memorial Day this year," the Garden City Police stated.

Garden City Police, Boise State Police, Idaho State Police and other agencies are on heightened alert during the weekend of Sept 19 to the 21.

"Officers will be actively targeting drivers who choose to Drive Under the Influence and stopping multiple vehicles around the stadium. There will be no tolerance for DUI violations. If you are impaired and drive, you will be contacted and subject to arrest. Plan for a sober ride before enjoying the football game and do not put yourself or others at risk," the department stated.

The Boise Police Department (BPD) posted reminders for a safe game day experience:

  • Do Not Drink and Drive: Make sure to arrange for a designated driver or use alternative transportation if you plan to consume alcohol.
  • Alcohol Consumption: If you choose to drink, do so only in designated areas. The 10 to 10 Zone is in effect for home games.
  • Open Containers: Public areas outside the 10 to 10 Zone, including parking lots and neighborhood streets, do not permit open containers of alcohol. Officers will be vigilant for underage drinking and adults providing alcohol to minors.
  • Be Respectful: Use crosswalks, dispose of litter properly, and be considerate of neighbors and businesses.
  • Parking: Park legally and safely to avoid tickets or towing. Follow all posted signs and regulations.
  • Bag Policy: To expedite stadium entry, please leave bags at home as Boise State enforces a clear bag policy.

This season, BPD is enforcing a "10 to 10 Zone" in the area around the stadium that permits alcohol consumption from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on home game days in certain areas.
