BOISE, Idaho — The man charged with hitting two women with his car Saturday night in downtown Boise made his first appearance in court Monday.
46-year-old Jacob Miller of Boise was arrested after prosecutors say he ran a red light and hit two women who were in a crosswalk, leaving them seriously injured.
During Miller's arraignment, prosecutors said one of the victims was flung 15 to 25 feet, while the other victim was stuck in the windshield of the car – until falling off after the car swerved.
A witness named Elyse Panzella told KTVB she saw a black Volkswagen Beetle speeding downtown, with one of the victims stuck on the front of the car.
"I noticed a woman still on the windshield of the vehicle," Panzella said. "As he's driving, her head and upper shoulder were still lodged through the windshield and her body was on the hood of the car he was trying to drive away."
Prosecutors claim Miller also hit two other cars, a barrier and curbs. The incident ended after Miller crashed into another car and was tackled by several witnesses after trying to run away.
"Due to the egregious facts of this case, the state is extremely concerned about the safety of the community," a member of the prosecutor's office said during the arraignment. "The defendant showed no regard for the lives of others. He was driving at erratic speeds and after hitting the victims, not only did the defendant fail to stop and assist the victims - he continued to drive erratically while one of the victims was lodged in his windshield for several blocks."
Boise Police told KTVB on Monday that they are waiting for test results to determine if Miller was impaired. The two victims remain in the hospital.
A judge set Miller's bond at $1 million. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 10.
