BLISS, Idaho —
A high-speed chase on Interstate 84 near Twin Falls Wednesday evening injured two police officers and the suspect.
The crash also destroyed the Shoshone police chief's patrol car.
The incident began in Hollister at 4:48 p.m. where Twin Falls County Deputies responded to a report that a black Honda Civic pumped gas at a gas station and drove off without paying.
Deputies spotted the vehicle on US 93 and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle fled and lost the officers somewhere in the city of Twin Falls, according to Idaho State Police.
Police located the vehicle around 5:03 p.m. on US 93 near milepost 45 in Jerome County. Jerome officers attempted to stop the vehicle, and the suspect resisted by fleeing westbound on Interstate 84.
An Idaho State Police officer placed spikes on Interstate 84 to stop the driver, but the driver avoided them by swerving toward the trooper.
Police continued the chase for the suspect who clocked at speeds over 120 miles per hour, according to a Shoshone Police Department Facebook post.
Officers from Gooding County, Gooding City and Shoshone joined the pursuit by halting traffic on Interstate 84 and setting up spike strips.
On the section of the interstate right before Bliss, officers blocked the on-ramp to prevent drivers from entering the dangerous situation, according to a Shoshone Police Department Facebook post.
Officers shielding themselves behind a guard rail attempted to throw spike strips onto the interstate to stop the suspect.
The suspect swerved into the median, lost control and t-boned Shoshone Police Chief Austin Smith's patrol car at nearly 85 miles per hour, according to the Shoshone Police Department's press release.
Below is the Shoshone Police Department's Facebook post:
Smith was not in the patrol car at the time of impact.
"Thank the lord the K9 Eros wasn't with Chief Smith, because Chief Smiths [sic] vehicle was hit right where Eros rides," Shoshone Police Department said in the Facebook post.
Smith's car stuck an officer standing nearby and debris hit some of the Shoshone officers. After colliding with the chief's car, the suspect's vehicle slid a quarter-of-a-mile before it came to a complete stop, according to the Shoshone Police Department.
Officers apprehended the driver, Jesus Antonio Reyes, without any additional major issues.
Reyes was arrested for felony eluding, aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated battery on a police officer, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Reyes was injured in the crash and had to be transported to North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding, and then transferred to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise for further treatment.
A Gooding City officer suffered minor injuries and was transported to North Canyon Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
In the above Facebook post, the Shoshone Police Department detailed two unusual high-speed pursuits the department was involved in during the last 24 hours, including one in Wendell that ended with police shooting and killing the suspect.
"The last two days, have been absolutely mind boggling how crazy Idaho is turning into," the Shoshone Police Department said in the post.
