Student finds backpack left behind at school with BB gun inside

Principal Jennifer Weske said that it is believed that the BB gun was brought to school by a student who is no longer enrolled at Hillside.

BOISE, Idaho — In an email sent to parents and staff, Hillside Junior High in Boise reported that an unloaded BB gun was left on their campus on Tuesday.

After school on Tuesday, a backpack was found outside the school. After believing it was left behind, a student turned the backpack into the school office. Upon investigation, school officials found the BB gun inside the bag without ammunition.

In an email to parents and staff, Principal Jennifer Weske said it is believed that the BB gun was brought to school by a student who is no longer enrolled at Hillside Junior High.

It also appears that the student who turned the backpack in was unaware of the BB gun inside.

Weske said she and staff are working closely with district officials. They are taking all measures to "ensure the continued safety of our students and staff."

She said this incident serves as a reminder of the "See Something, Say Something" principle that the school is educating kids about.  If students or staff see anything concerning or suspicious, they are encouraged to report it immediately to a trusted adult. They can also contact 208-343-COPS.
