Boise River conditions remain too dangerous to float

Current river conditions are unsafe due to cold water and fast flow rate, float season historically starts in late June.

BOISE, Idaho — As temperatures rise, so does anticipation for the Boise River float season.

But you will need to pump your breaks if you're planning on pumping up your raft anytime soon.

While it might be tempting to cool off in the river, conditions remain too dangerous to float.

Ada County Parks & Waterways Director Scott Koberg says, as of Monday the river is cold - currently around 50 degrees - and the river is flowing fast.

"We're right around 2,000 cubic feet per second (cfs)," Koberg said. "That's nearly twice the total that we would typically see a float season operate."

Last week, a woman was hospitalized after jumping into the Boise River

The Boise Fire Department sweeps the river to clear out hazards and debris every year before float season, but they also need flows to decrease before doing that.

"Flows need to drop a little bit," Koberg said. "Even though we're having this warm spell right now, we really need sort of sustained temperatures - air temperatures to be 80 degrees or above for a pretty consistent period of time."

The official start of float season has historically been around the end of June. An official date will be announced on the Float the Boise website, which also has an interactive map and up-to-date information on river flows and water temperature for the summertime staple.

"We know everybody's excited for it," Koberg said. "It's always one of the things you just sort of have to do every summer, but be patient with us and we'll get everything ready and make sure the public knows when it's time to float."
