BOISE, Idaho — Contractors began hauling asphalt to the detour road on Teton Pass Friday, bringing a silver lining to drivers who relied on the road on a daily basis.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) said on Thursday, it hopes to have the road paved and open to the public by the end of June. The detour will feature two 12-foot lanes, one in each direction and concrete barriers on the outer portion of the road to protect drivers.
"The detour has been constructed on the interior of the curve, away from the unstable slide area. The detour will create a slightly sharper curve and steeper grade" the department stated in a news release.
WYDOT said because of the sharp curve, there will be reduced speeds and "advanced signage reduced speed and any other applicable restrictions."
As previously reported, on Friday, June 8, the road at milepost 12.8 on Teton Pass, which links Idaho to Wyoming, "catastrophically failed," said WYDOT. The road was already closed due to a previous mudslide, and no one was injured.
WYDOT detoured drivers 30-75 minutes to Jackson Hole through US-89 toward Hoback Junction.
On Thursday, the department said there is a more permanent reconstruction plan in the works.
