Two Treasure Valley counties test ballot machines for accuracy ahead of election

Thursday marked the counties' last public logic and accuracy tests before Nov. 7.

BOISE, Idaho — On Thursday, Ada and Canyon counties held their last logic and accuracy tests before the election

The counties ran election day ballots, absentee ballots and early voting ballots through ballot counting machines. The goal is to ensure the machines work properly from start to finish.

"We take pride in how we run our elections," said Saul Seyler, Ada County election director. "We take pride in being open to the public."

"The tests, which happen multiple times during each election cycle, are typically open to the public in order to promote transparency," Seyler said.

He said the tests help prove to community members that they can trust election results, especially considering election integrity is a hot-button topic.

“People are skeptical of machines in this day and age," Seyler said. "So, this builds confidence in the process. It's a transparent process, and it shows people that it’s secure and accurate.”

Canyon County spokesperson Joe Decker agrees.

"We encourage anybody who has questions about the integrity of an election to show up because it does verify that the way the ballots are marked is exactly the way they are counted by our tabulating machines," he said.

Both tests on Thursday ran smoothly. The ballot machines are now locked down until ballots are ready to be counted on election day.

In Ada County, Seyler said they will do one more logic and accuracy test before counting starts on Tuesday and then one after the results are in to ensure everything is correct.

Tuesday's election has everything from local mayoral and city council races to bonds and levies for school districts. For more information about what is on the ballot, visit KTVB's voter guide

Early voting is available in most counties, including Ada and Canyon, until Friday, Nov. 3. On election day, Nov. 7, polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

People who are not yet registered to vote can register to vote at a polling place on Friday or Tuesday.
