'Good Samaritan' back home recovering after being hit by a car while helping hit-and-run victim

Tom Lamp is the Good Samaritan who got out of his car to help a motorcyclist after a hit-and-run. Both men were hospitalized after being hit by another car.

MERIDIAN, Idaho — A Boise man is back home and recovering after being hit by a car while helping the victim of a hit-and-run in Meridian in June.

57-year-old Tom Lamp got out of his car to help a seriously injured motorcyclist when another car hit both men.

"I saw some lights, I heard a tire skid, and then a car was coming up the road and hit us both," Lamp said. "It hit me first and then hit him."

Tom was out driving Uber when he decided to be a Good Samaritan. The accident has pumped the breaks on his job, but Lamp says he would do it again if he had to.

"You just have to be a caring person. Somebody that cares about life and cares about other people - that's what made me get out, because I couldn't pass somebody that was hurt on side of the road," Lamp said. "Because all I could think is what if that was me or somebody I love."

Lamp is back home with his family, recovering from a broken foot. While he is out of the hospital, he has a long road to recovery.

"I have 12 weeks where I can't put any pressure on my right foot at all," Lamp said. "After that, it'll just be aftercare for six months to a year before I get back to Uber - and I miss it every day."

While Lamp recovers, a GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to help pay for expenses until he can get from the wheelchair back into the driver's seat.

"If that guy lived because I did that, or at least made it to the hospital because I did that - it was all worth it," Lamp said. "And I would do it again."
