BOISE, Idaho — Raise a glass! The search is on for the first ever ‘Bar Boss.’ It's an online competition fundraiser with more than one Idaho tie. Idaho native and ‘Breaking Bad’ star Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston's Dos Hombres Mezcal teamed up with Colossal online competitions for its Bar Boss challenge.
On Wednesday, KTVB caught up with a Caldwell man vying for that top spot.
Shawn Zavala has been serving up drinks for more than two decades.
“I've done everything from club scenes to sports bars, pool bars, you name it, I’ve been there,” Zavala said. “I’ve got to experience a lot of different cultures and a lot of different ways of doing drinks.”
Now, he's made it to the quarterfinals for the first ever ‘Bar Boss’ competition.
“I didn't realize this was even out there until I was nominated by someone,” Zavala said.
The competition features people from over the country, who are hoping to get their shot as this year's Bar Boss. People can vote daily for the bartender of their choice and the winner will get $10,000, as well as be on the cover of bartender magazine.
“It's really cool, I’ve got a lot of people there who have been really pulling for me,” Zavala said. “I'm representing Idaho.”
It’s also for a good cause. Funds raised will benefit the Kind campaign, a non-profit that brings awareness and healing to adverse and lasting effects of girl-against girl bullying. Zavala told KTVB, being a part of this competition has been a blessing.
“Ten thousand dollars can do a lot of good in someone's life,” Zavala said. “I've made a long-lasting relationship in this industry and it's really neat to be able to support them and do this for that as well.”
Voting for the quarterfinals ends on January 25. From there, there are semifinals and then the finals. You can vote for Zavala here.
After this story aired, KTVB learned about another Idahoan also in the competition. Hunter Denning works in Eagle at The Corner Hustle in Eagle. You can vote for him here.
