BOISE, Idaho — The Nampa Police Department is inviting the local community to come to a memorial service for a police K-9 killed in a crash over the weekend.
The service for K-9 Riddick will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. at the Idaho Police K-9 Memorial in Meridian.
The K-9 memorial is near the Idaho Peace Officers' Memorial on the campus of Idaho State Police. The street address is 700 S. Stratford Dr. in Meridian.
The dog was on duty when the vehicle he was riding in was hit by a suspect during a police pursuit Saturday night.
Riddick’s handler, Cody Huss, was treated for injuries, but the dog died on the scene. Riddick was a 3-and-a-half-year-old German Shepard, and he had been serving with Nampa PD for two years.
“It's not a whole lot different than a fallen officer,” said Brad Childers, lieutenant for Nampa PD.
Riddick was one of 12 K-9 dogs at the department – and NPD has the largest K-9 unit in the State of Idaho, Childers said.
Parking for the service will be on the driving track at the Idaho POST Academy, which is a short walk from the memorial site.
Nampa police also said they are hoping to stream the service on their Facebook page.
