BOISE, Idaho — The Ada County Sheriff's Office on Monday announced a grass fire in southeast Boise that burned roughly 100 acres was caused by a mortar-style firework.
The sheriff's office said it responded to the Lydle Fire alongside the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) around 4 p.m., on Friday, June 28. A 16-year-old with friends called 911 to report the fire after officials said they launched the firework.
After the firework caused the area's dry grass and brush to ignite, the group called police and attempted to extinguish the flames, but were unsuccessful. The teen was cited and released for misdemeanor firing timber on prairie land, according to the Ada County Sheriff's Office.
BLM Idaho Fire said the Lydle Fire – which began in the area of East Plexi Court and South Leeds Lane – was contained around 6 p.m. June 28. BLM responded to the fire with a dozer, water tender, helicopter, fire investigator and four engines.
Setting off fireworks on BLM land is prohibited, the sheriff's office said. However, the Ada County Board of Commissioners earlier this month banned the use of fireworks in unincorporated areas. The ban will apply outside the city limits of Boise, Eagle, Garden City, Kuna, Meridian and Star.
The Ada County Sheriff's Office said violators of the fireworks ban could be charged with a misdemeanor. Click here for more information and to find an interactive map for the ban.
