BOISE, Idaho — Chad Daybell's trial is moving forward, with peremptory challenges of the selected potential jury taking place on Monday.
Last week, the court selected 57 potential jurors to move forward to peremptory challenges. Originally, the court was seeking 50 potential jurors, however to help create a "buffer" of sorts, they added an additional seven. This helps the court with jury selection in the long run. By adding the additional seven, it allows the court to have some wiggle room if a juror were to look up the case, or have other commitments come up.
The court went through preemptory challenges starting at 10 a.m. Monday, and concluded at noon roughly. During the court session, they narrowed down the potential pool from 57 to 18.
The jury is compromised of 10 men and eight women. Of the 18 selected, six will be alternates, however they will not find out they are alternates until later in the court proceedings, closer to deliberations.
Judge Steven Boyce decided not to livestream Monday's hearing to protect the jurors identities.
Last week, the court added several jurors over the week, with 16 added Monday, four added Tuesday, 17 added Wednesday, and 15 added Thursday. The court was at the total of 52 at that point, but on Friday, called another panel of jurors to create the buffer of additional jurors. The court concluded on Friday with 57 potential jurors.
After preemptory challenges were completed, court ended and will reconvene at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10.
