BOISE, Idaho — Boise High senior Avery Howell earned another prestigious accolade Tuesday amid her final run leading the Brave – seeing her name appear on the roster for the 2024 McDonald's All American Game.
The USC signee was one of just 24 girls selected for the top basketball showcase for high school seniors across the nation. Howell and two other Trojans are set to compete with the best of the best in April at the Toyota Center in Houston.
Howell, the 2022-2023 Gatorade Idaho Girls Basketball Player of the Year, is a five-star prospect and ranked No. 23 nationally in the class of 2024 on ESPN. Boise improved to 19-1 Tuesday with a 59-32 win over Timberline on senior night.
Just a few hours before the 5A SIC contest, the McDonald’s All American Games Selection Committee unveiled the rosters during ESPN's NBA Today, with Howell appearing on the Girls West squad.
The national attention is nothing new for the local standout, as she received offers from some of the nation's top programs. Howell narrowed her options down to USC, Utah, Washington, Indiana and Duke, before signing with the Trojans in November.
Howell is just the second player from Idaho selected to the McDonald's All American Game, joining former Mountain View star Destiny Slocum. Coeur d'Alene's Teagan Colvin and Lake City's Avery Waddington were also nominated for the 2024 game earlier this month, but did not make the 24-player roster.
The 5-foot-11 Boise guard set the single-season record in points and rebounds as a junior with the Brave, averaging 22.1 points, 13.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.8 steals per game. Howell and Co. will likely be in the mix for a 5A state title come mid-February.
Analysts, prep scouts, media and coaches from throughout the country finalized the rosters out of 729 nominees based on athletic accomplishments, scholastic achievement and upstanding behavior. Players were nominated by a prep coach, athletic director, principal or member of the game's selection committee.
The girls game is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, at 4:30 p.m. MT (6:30 p.m. ET) on ESPN2, followed by the boys game at 7 p.m. MT (9 p.m. ET) on ESPN.
