BOISE, Idaho — For the first time in 19 games, the Broncos (4-5) will have a new starting quarterback when they take The Blue against New Mexico (3-6) on Saturday.
Redshirt freshman Maddux Madsen will make his first career start. Head coach Andy Avalos made the announcement at practice on Friday.
Sophomore Taylen Green had been the team's starting quarterback but started sharing playing time with Madsen midway through this season.
During the Broncos' 37-30 loss to Fresno State, Madsen completed 22 of 42 pass attempts for 258 yards, a career high.
Over the last four games, Green has attempted 24 passes, while Madsen has attempted 89 passes.
Avalos told reporters Friday morning Green will still play.
"We feel like this will be an even greater opportunity to get (Taylen) involved in the game and have him present more in the game than he has in the last couple of games," he said. "We're really looking forward to building on the production we had as an offense. Our production has really gone up since we have been using the two quarterbacks and we intend to keep using both quarterbacks."
For the first time since 1997, the Broncos to 4-5 overall.
The Broncos take on the Lobos on Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Albertsons Stadium.
